Charm City Mods vs. Rockers

October 6, 2011

Neither hurricanes, nor the unseasonably cold temps would derail this year’s Charm City Mods vs. Rockers show. Held on Saturday, October 1 at Brewer’s Landing in Essex, Maryland (just east of Baltimore), the show featured bikes and scooters of all makes, models, and decades.

Rockabilly, pin-up girls, flannel jackets, canned beer, smoked meat sandwiches, grease, and belching exhaust pipes were the rule of the day. Attendees were treated to a cacophony of sights and sounds reminiscent of those parties thrown by the ‘folk devils’ in Great Britain not so long ago.

Check out a few of the photos that I took after the jump.

What I LOVE about this: The eclectic “types” of people all attracted to this one show. How FUN!
    :)

Nice blog….nice photos of some cool looking people. But where are the mods?

  3. October 6, 2011 5:53 pm

The first thing I thought of when I saw the “mocker” sign was Ringo Starr’s famous reply to “Are you a mod or a rocker?”

Because I couldn’t make it, I guess I have settle for watching “Quadrophenia.” :)

dig the beef sandwich, now I am hungry :) awesome collection of photos!

  5. October 6, 2011 5:57 pm

I know some people who would go nuts over those bikes. One of them is typing out a comment right now! That looks like it would be a blast to attend.

  6. October 6, 2011 5:58 pm

    Awesome pictures.

  7. October 6, 2011 6:00 pm

    Awesome.

  8. October 6, 2011 6:07 pm

Well, I’m not a biker chick, but those photos are super cool… :)

Going to one of these shows is akin to observing sea life at an aquarium. You never quite know what is going to swim past so you have to keep the camera flashing.

There was a weird mix of rockers, hipsters, pin-up girls, Harley fanatics, and commuter scooters. Noticeably absent are the mods, although there was a woman selling vintage gear out the side of her van. It seems the traditional mod sub-culture has given way to something else.

And that sandwich was better than it looks.

    Cheers,

    -C

I love your photos. They reminded my of my days as a youth in Brazil, where there were a lot of European bikes and scooters. Great blog!

Great photos. Sounds like a great day. I love motorcycles and am partial to old British bikes with a sidecar.

  14. October 6, 2011 8:12 pm

Nice shots! I’ve always been scared to get on one of those :(

  15. October 6, 2011 9:01 pm

I love the photos! What a fun event. I’m drooling over the orange Ducati with what looks to be leather saddlebags. The Royal Enfield with sidecar is sweet too, proving style has nothing to do with speed. Makes me wish I still had my ’79 Honda CB400. Coulda cafe-racered that out!

  16. October 6, 2011 9:03 pm

That’s a pity, I’m toying with the idea of a cafe racer build as well. Quite a different ride from my Royal Enfield!

  17. October 6, 2011 9:27 pm

What an excellent collection. I can’t get enough!

  18. October 6, 2011 9:30 pm

One day I would like to be badass enough to ride a bike. Great pics!

  27. October 7, 2011 3:38 am

Awesome bikes. I loved the bright orange Ducati, but the first picture, that oh so sexy ’47 Indian, is my favorite. That thing is gorgeous.

That Ducati single is one of the most beautiful motorcycles I’ve ever seen. All congrats to the owner and builder/restorer.

The CB cafe racer’s damned neat, too.

I love motorcycles so this was an awesome post!!

You know I think you Americans have embraced the whole Mods and Rockers thing much more than we ever did in the UK. Sure we had the beach riots in Brighton but that was way back when. We have meets and rallys in the UK but they’re not on the same scale or quality as you do in the USA.

  37. October 7, 2011 7:56 am

Fabulous! I live near the Ace Cafe in west London and keep forgetting to make the effort to check out the bikes. I wonder how many Who fans know that the location for Jimmy’s house in “Quadrophenia” is in the path of HS2 and likely to be demolished? Compulsory purchase unless we fight it. The Ealing against HS2 campaign is hoping to attract film amd music fans to the cause. Please visit the site (http://ealingagainsths2.wordpress.com/) and let us know if you are interested in organising or taking part in an event.

Loved to see the Royal Enfield. Mine is in Chennai, India, whereas I´m in Germany. I know how much I miss my cast iron Royal Enfield Electra 350CC

  41. October 7, 2011 1:31 pm

That is awesome! I am looking for these kind of events, never found one!

The Royal Enfield is gorgeous as well as the custom 2012!

The heading Mods vs. Rockers grabs me from the start! in my opinion its rockers every time :) they’ve lasted from back right up to today in this stereotypical world we live in holding on to that true rocker spirit!

Dazzle Rebel is talking nonsense when he says the Mods & Rocker scene has taken off far more in the States than in the U.K. He obviously hasn’t been to the Ace Cafe or the Brighton Burn up. It’s more alive here than anywhere else in the world! So please, get your facts straight. As someone who’s been involved in the scene for more years than I care to remember, I should know.

    • November 16, 2011 9:29 pm

Ok Micky G. I’ve visted the Ace Cafe many a time and yes it’s great. We do hold some great shows, rallies and meetings and yes I can see how that previous post looked like I was dogging the UK scene – I was catagorically not doing that at all. Sorry. It’s just at every rally I’ve been to there’s only about 15% classic or reproduction classic bikes, 15% custom or self-built cafe racers and 70% or more stock modern sports bikes. I witnessed a ‘small’ gathering in Las Vegas that turn those statics on their head and I’ve never seen a bigger gathering of BSA’s, Vincents, Ariels, Lambrettas and Vespas in my life.

No offense intended and maybe I’ve just missed the ‘vital’ rallies but the retro scene in the States seems to be kicking out at a higher RPM than over here. I would welcome an invitation to an event that proves me wrong because I would truly love to witness it and become better aquainted to that scene.

      Cheers,

There is a picture of me and my boy on our hondas. Can I use if I give you credit on my buddy’s blog?

    • January 9, 2012 10:33 pm

Sure, I don’t see any problem with that. Sweet cafes by the way. I didn’t haul my bike up from NOVA that day due to the iffy weather.

      Cheers,

Yeah, man. I’m glad y’all changed the dates as I was out-of-town for the original session.

Maybe this year I’ll drag my Enfield up that way.
